National Estate Planning Awareness Week

MADISON, WI, October 1, 2013 PRESS RELEASE

October 21-27, 2013 is National Estate Planning Awareness Week,

As proclaimed by Congress in 2008.  The congressional resolution noted that “Many Americans are unaware that lack of estate planning and financial illiteracy may cause their assets to be disposed of to unintended parties by default through the complex process of probate.”

Madison-based Wilson Law Group attorney Daniel B. Purtell noted that estate planning is one of the most commonly overlooked areas of personal financial management. More than 120 million Americans do not have proper estate plans to protect themselves or their families in the event of sickness, accidents, or untimely death. This costs many families wasted dollars and unnecessary hardship that can be minimized with proper planning.  Proper planning encompasses not only the event of death and passing on one’s wealth but also, life situations that often face unprepared.

Madison Estate Council Member, Wayne W. Wilson, stated, “Cooperation among the various financial and legal professionals is crucial to helping families develop and implement effective planning.  Public awareness promotes the importance of planning and working with the right professionals to achieve the right result for each family.”

According to a 2010 industry trends survey of estate planners conducted by WealthCounsel, a national organization of estate planning attorneys, nearly 70% of the respondents indicated that Americans fail to plan because they lack awareness as to why they should.

“Estate planning is a thoughtful process and should not be approached in a transactional manner,” said John L. Haslam, an Estate and Elder Law attorney with Wilson Law Group. “Our personalized counseling approach includes access to state-of-the-art document drafting systems that allow for customized family plans, a network of experienced colleagues throughout the country with whom we can collaborate, and superior educational resources that transfers into more thorough and appropriate plans for our clients,” Haslam stated.
